It’s happens a lot – an employee goes to work but starts to feel sick a few hours later. Does going home early count as a sick day?

The answer is no. Sick days don’t need to be taken a day at a time.

It’s happened to everyone – you’ve gone to work but started to feel sick after a few hours. If you go home early, you should be paid for the hours you’ve worked. Any ordinary hours you’ve missed because you’re sick come out of your accrued sick leave.

An employee can take as much paid sick leave as they have accumulated. There’s no minimum or maximum amount of paid sick leave that can be taken at one time (as long as evidence and notice requirements are met).

Remember, if an employee is feeling unwell and has any cold or flu like symptoms, it’s important to follow government health advice which may include getting tested for coronavirus and staying home.
