The national workplace relations system is a collection of legislation that applies to most employees and employers in Australia. It includes the Fair Work Act 2009, the National Employment Standards, registered agreements and awards.

Employers who breach these laws risk penalties of up to $63,000 for each breach. Higher penalties also apply for some ‘serious contraventions’ (up to $126,000 per contravention for an individual and up to $630,000 per contravention for companies).
