The Federal Circuit Court has imposed a $272,850 penalty
against a media company to send it a “serious message” not to
disguise employment relationships as unpaid internships.

The Fair Work Ombudsman has issued a media release advising that
it will audit employers in NSW as part of a new campaign. Fair Work
Inspectors will target businesses located in and around Dubbo,
Moree, Narrabri, Wellington and Narromine and will run until
August.
Coles Given 10 Days to Fix Fair Work Failures
In a decision published on Tuesday morning, the Fair
Work Commission ruled that the Coles EBA, which
covers some 77,000 employees, failed what is known as the better
off overall test (BOOT). For a workplace
agreement to be legal, all employees must be made better off when
an agreement is compared to the award.

Over 25% of Hobart employers not compliant
Spot checks of employers north-west of Hobart have found over
25% are not fully compliant with their obligations under federal
workplace laws. Businesses were scrutinised to assess their
compliance with minimum wage rates, overtime and weekend penalty
rates, allowances, and pay-slip and record-keeping obligations.
McDonald’s underpaying employees up to 30% below award
McDonald’s employees are being underpaid tens of millions
of dollars per year thanks to an agreement struck between the fast
food giant and the food workers’ union. More
than two-thirds of the fast food giant’s workers are paid less than
the basic wages safety net, known as the Fast Food
Award.

A hair product retailer operating two shopping centre
kiosks in Melbourne is facing legal action for allegedly
underpaying its workers tens of thousands of dollars.
Corioliss Pty Ltd faces penalties of up to $54,000 per
contravention.

$214,200 penalty for 7-Eleven operator
A 7-Eleven operator in Sydney has been penalised a record
$214,200 for deliberately short-changing two migrant employees and
falsifying records, following legal action by the Fair Work
Ombudsman.
