Easter is fast approaching with Good Friday falling on 18 April and Easter Monday on 21 April. In many parts of the country Saturday 19 April has also been declared a full public holiday.

Employees covered by the  General Retail Industry Award 2010 will, accordingly, be entitled to receive the applicable public holiday penalty rates (generally time and a half) for all work performed on the above days.

We’d like to remind retail employers that the Award allows you and your non-casual employees to agree to ‘substitute’ another day for the public holiday or to add a days’ leave to an employees’ leave balance. This is an effective way to reduce the very high costs associated with opening and staffing stores over the Easter break.
